SM0679: Tiger Skin Rug Suite

Tiger Skin Rug Suite
For Clarinet in B flat With Accompaniment of Two Harps & Optional High Voice(s)
Hannah Haynes

Cover ImageIn March 2021 I was commissioned by the children’s author, Joan Haig, to compose a short suite of pieces based on selected scenes from her book, Tiger Skin Rug, which is published in the UK by Cranachan.

In this suite, the tiger is represented by the clarinet. The clarinet part is intended for an advanced player. The two harp parts are easier, and are intended to be playable by children - either with one on a part, or with a group of players on each harp part.

The optional simple voice part in the final movement gives a further opportunity for the inclusion of children in any performance.

In March 2021 I was commissioned by the children’s author, Joan Haig, to compose a short suite of pieces based on selected scenes from her book, Tiger Skin Rug, which is published in the UK by Cranachan.

In this suite, the tiger is represented by the clarinet. The clarinet part is intended for an advanced player (Grade 6+).

The two harp parts are easier, and are intended to be playable by children - either with one on a part, or with a group of players on each harp part. The optional simple voice part in the final movement gives a further opportunity for the inclusion of children in any performance.

The first harp part can be played on a lever harp with 26 strings or more, or on a pedal harp.

The second harp part can be played either on a full-size lever harp (with around 34 strings), or on any pedal harp.

For pedal harpists, pedal settings are given at the start of each movement and pedal changes are indicated by boxed text beneath the lower stave.

For lever harpists with instruments tuned in E flat major, lever settings are given at the start of each movement, and lever changes within movements are indicated by diamond shaped notes and by text between the staves. Some lever changes are also indicated by boxed text at the end of movements.

Fingerings are merely suggestions. Any practical fingering will suffice.

Tiger Skin Rug by Joan HaigTiger Skin Rug by Joan Haig
An old promise. A mysterious tiger. A magical adventure.

Lal and his brother Dilip miss home. They don’t like drizzle, midges, or the tiger skin rug in their creepy new house. All they want is to leave Scotland and go back to India. But that’s before they make friends with Jenny, and before the tiger comes back to life... The tiger tells them it will take them home in return for their help: it cannot rest until it fulfills an old promise. Can Lal, Dilip and Jenny help it on its quest? Will they get back home? And who is following them?

Tiger Skin Rug (Cranachan Publishing, 2020) is Joan Haig's Carnegie nominated debut novel for children.
