Foreword

Most of my compositions have a story behind them….. and these are no exception! Giving a title, or a story to a composition is, for me, to make up for a lack of lyrics, and it’s rare for me to sit and play these tunes without conjuring up the reason for the title, and the fun times that happen behind the music.

West Park is the name we gave the new home of our lovely former neighbours, Steve and Judith. We were very sorry when they left the neighbourhood, but now have their beautiful new abode and gardens to visit whenever we can!

Skerryvore was written after reading about Robert Lewis Stevenson, and his family's construction of lighthouses around Scotland in the mid 1800s. Skerryvore is the tallest lighthouse in Scotland and posed many issues with its construction.

Vinegar Hill was the former residence of good friends of ours, Don and Glenn - beautiful native gardens and lots of native birds. The story behind the name is that the area was rich with natural springs, but the first owner got his nickname, Johnny Vinegar, and the name of the area, Vinegar Hill from the fact that the water in his springs was rather minerally.

Bev's Fancy is dedicated to the wonderful and extraordinarily talented Beverley Young, and while I would describe this as a straightforward tune in the style of O'Carolan, the music reflects not Bev, but our ongoing friendship of the last twenty years which was sealed with several years of Thursday afternoon rehearsals, cups of tea, and lovely traditional songs. Although our paths rarely cross now, it feels like no time has passed between us each time we meet. Bev is an absolute gem.

Fru Sally is a slow reel written for a dear friend Sally, whom I refer to as 'Sally in Sweden'. After an exchange of tunes I wrote this one for Sally - she's such an inspiration - she builds harps, teaches, arranges music for harp and choir and has lovely fur babies!!

Mrs Raewynn Robertson was written for the birthday of our treasured friend by the same name, who is also a champion supporter of the harp, a student of mine, and a supporter of all things Celtic.

Thanks to the gorgeous Moira Pagan for the fantastic cover art (www.moirapagan.wix.com) and the cover formatting by John Pagan - a collaborative effort spread across several continents!
