SM0177 Fantasy for Harp by Stephen Dodgson

Fantasy for Harp
Stephen Dodgson

Fantasy for Harp by Stephen DodgsonThe Fantasy for Harp was written in 1952 at the invitation of Maria Korchinska, and was first performed by her that year at a Macnaghten Concert in London. It is skilfully written for the harp, as throughout the piece the composer, restricting himself to only a few modes, has created music of tremendous variety. This means that there are very few pedal changes during the course of the piece.

Although Stephen Dodgson has written a certain amount of vocal music, the bulk of his composition so far has been instrumental. He has written extensively for the harp. There is a Capriccio and Finak which he wrote for the Wigmore Ensemble (sextet), a Duo (1958) for flute and harp, and a Ballade (1969) for solo harp. His second guitar concerto (1972) contains a very important part for the harp.
