Cover ImageMost of the music notated here is played (and hopefully the life breathed into it) on the recording “About Time 2”. (Greentrax CTRAX 126) The other pieces are tunes that I enjoy teaching because there is no greater joy as a teacher than sharing in the achievement a learner player feels when a melody comes to life under their struggling fingers or they create a unique arrangement from a few guide notes.

Introduction

Most of the music notated here is played (and hopefully the life breathed into it) on the recording “About Time 2”. (Greentrax CTRAX 126) The other pieces are tunes that I enjoy teaching because there is no greater joy as a teacher than sharing in the achievement a learner player feels when a melody comes to life under their struggling fingers or they create a unique arrangement from a few guide notes.

Notation of the more complicated pieces is, of neccessity, a compromise as I rarely play the same piece exactly the same way twice. Where rests are given this almost invariably requires the string(s) played before to be damped with the finger pads, or whole hand, at the correct interval. (Except harp 2 in “Drummond Castle’ and “Barbara Grigor”) Tempi and dynamics are important personal preferences and any indications given are but a guide. If I had stuck to conventions this music would not exist!

Wendy Stewart is internationally known both as a soloist on the clarsach with tours throughout Europe and to Japan, and as a a member of the highly acclaimed band Ceolbeg (a Gaelic word signifying dance music) who have toured extensively in the US and Canada. The band blends modem and traditional instruments to create a heady mix of harp, Highland bagpipes, drums, synthesizer and traditional song. She has three albums with Ceolbeg as well as two solo albums, and a previous book of harp arrangements “About Time” (Ta igh na Teud). She has recently been appointed Artistic Director for a concert series on Scottish Harps at the Edinburgh International Festival and also teaches at the B.A. course in Traditional Music at the RSAMD and at Strathclyde University.
