About this work & Performance Notes

The Wild Hunt
Mixed Ability 4-part harp ensemble
Supplied Score& 4 parts: Melody, Harp 2, Harp 3 & Harp 4

This is essentially a mixed-ability ensemble with the least experienced players having the privilege of taking the melody throughout (the “Melody” part, logically enough...). However, I’ve added an optional bass line so that if there are players with more experience on this part they will have more to do. For lever harpists playing this part, once the levers have been set as indicated at the start, no further lever changes are needed throughout the piece, even if the optional bass line is played. However, pedal harpists will have to make changes if they’re playing that bass line.

The Harp 4 players also have the melody in sections [1] and [2], so I’ve added the optional bass line there too. Harp 4 has a fast quaver part from section [3], but if the hands are used in the way indicated by the tails-up R / tails-down L convention, it’s not difficult. Harp 4 lever harpists won’t need to make any lever changes at any point in the piece either - though, as with the Melody players, pedal harpists will have to make changes if they’re taking that optional bass line.

Harps 2 and 3 have fast quavers throughout, and I’ve indicated right and left hands for them too, partly because it’s a lot more satisfying (and easier) to play, and partly because it looks so much better in performance to keep both hands in action - and in this piece it adds to the impetuoso feel. But individual players can of course do what they feel comfortable with. The same is true from bar 29 onwards in the Harp 3 part, where I’ve indicated whole bars of right or left hands in order to faciliate lever changes.

The only difference between this new Creighton’s Collection edition and the original Pink copies is that in the original edition instead of writing out an optional bass line for the Melody and Harp 4 parts, I simply added chord names so that players could add their own accompanimental harmony.

Finally I should say that although I’ve written four parts here, and it sounds great to have all four, the piece is not unplayable with fewer parts - as long as you’ve got the melody and some low harmony, and preferably some of the other fancier bits, you’ll still have a satisfying version...
