Waltzing by Candlelight is another one of those pieces that began life as a solo in Harpo Four. Then, again like many other pieces, it just seemed to be longing to be turned into an ensemble.

I made a duet version first, which is essentially the short solo version plus another interweaving part; but I needed a fairly simple ensemble for the Hempstead Harp Party in Norfolk, which involved “exploding” (to use the incongruously over-dramatic technical term) the two harp parts into four, and then adding a D minor section.

I’ve tried to keep variety in all the parts, and keep all the players happy, without any of it being stressfully difficult.

It does lend itself, as the title suggests, to performance at a gentle candlelit soirée, but if you do that, just take care not to set fire to the curtains (or the harps).
