KL004: Patrick O'Neill's Manuscripts

Patrick O'Neill's Manuscripts
Kathleen Loughnane

Cover Image: Patrick O'Neill's ManuscriptsThis book presents a selection of tunes contained in the manuscripts of Patrick O'Neill (1765-1832), giving an insight into the eclectic range of music popular in south Tipperary/Kilkenny in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. The tunes were collected by Patrick O'Neill and represent his rich efforts to preserve what could still be saved from the gradual erosion of an Irish way of being.

Patrick O'Neill 0f Owning, South Kilkenny lived during a period of relative peace and stability following the major political upheaval of the 17th Century. This earlier period had seen the Catholic land-owning class lose their lands and property to English and Scottish settlers in the aftermath of the Cromwellian Wars 1649-1653 and the subsequent Penal Laws (1703-1746).
