KL001: Affairs of the Harp

Affairs of the Harp
Kathleen Loughnane

Cover Image: Affairs of the HarpIn this new edition, nine additional pieces have been included so that it now more fully reflects the contents of the companion CD, also called Affairs of the Harp. The musical contribution of my friends Alec Finn, Sean Ryan, Sharon Shannon, Mary Staunton, and Martina Goggin made the recording of the album a great pleasure for me and gives added warmth and colour to the various moods of the harp.

Much of the music in this collection is drawn from work of the harper composers of the 17 and 18 centuries, and the mostly anonymous composers of the dance music. The shapes of the arrangements owe much to the musicians I have listened to along the way. There is nothing sacrosanct or final about the written arrangement and it is only by listening to traditional musicians, especially the solo player, that a sense of style and ornamentation is acquired.

My hope is that these arrangements will strike a true chord in those who play them. The Irish harp is currently enjoying a remarkable revival. It has played a significant part in the story of Irish music for over a thousand years, and happily, as we move forward in the new millennium, it has returned to take its place in the heart and mainstream of that music.
